Site Aims

This site provides authoritative, up-to-date information on the Maori language of New Zealand. It presents key information (sometimes with commentary), lists references and links to other web sites (te reo Maori) of Aotearoa/New Zealand.

The main focus is the structure of Maori, Maori language revitalization and Maori-medium education.

In addition to providing info, It offers critique, analyses, and sound interpretations of the existing literature and raw data.

In the past I have contributed information on Maori to other sites. Many of these sites are now too out of date and often contain gross errors or mindless simplifications.

Audiences include those (especially from outside of New Zealand) who are interested in the Maori language and how Maori language revitalization efforts are proceeding, and students and learners of Maori looking for reliable resources.

At present the site consists of FAQs, two annotated bibliographies and basic resources (mainly brief descriptions with references to more detailed explanations) mostly as a result of user requests.

All pages are in English. I would like to set up a similar site in Maori, aimed at a Maori speaking audience.

At some stage the site will move to Unicode to allow long vowels in Maori to be designated by a macron. I also need to seriously look at how these pages are displaying on smart phones and notepads/tablets.

I get many requests for translations. Unfortunately I rarely have time to do these, occasionally I may help out.

I maintain this site in my own free time for the benefit of all. No organisation or group provides any financial assistance for maintaining these pages.

I have had many requests from organisations wanting to take over my site or commercialise it with advertising to which I will always decline.

Finally, any feed back very much appreciated.

This site went online on 1 August 2003.
